Limit point

Definition

Let XX be a topological space, let S⊆XS \subseteq X and let x∈Xx \in X. The point xx is a limit point of SS when each open set UU with x∈Ux \in U contains a point of SS other than xx.

Remarks

The point xx need not be in SS. In R\mathbb{R}, the point 00 is a limit point of {1/n:n≥1}\{1/n : n \ge 1\}. In a metric space, xx is a limit point of SS if and only if each ball B(x,ε)B(x, \varepsilon) contains a point of S∖{x}S \setminus \{x\}. The closure of SS is the union of SS and the set of its limit points. A point of SS that is not a limit point of SS is an isolated point of SS.

Explanations

L1 human

A limit point is a point that other points of the set crowd around. For the set {1,1/2,1/3,…}\{1, 1/2, 1/3, \ldots\}, the points crowd around 00, so 00 is a limit point, but 11 is not.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
