Surjective function

Definition

Let f ⁣:A→Bf \colon A \to B be a function. The function ff is surjective when, for each b∈Bb \in B, there is an a∈Aa \in A with f(a)=bf(a) = b.

Remarks

Other names are onto function and surjection. Equivalently, the range of ff is the whole codomain BB. The function x↦x3x \mapsto x^3 on R\mathbb{R} is surjective, and x↦x2x \mapsto x^2 on R\mathbb{R} is not, because −1-1 is not a value.

Explanations

L1 human

A surjective function hits every element of the codomain at least once. To prove surjectivity, take an arbitrary b∈Bb \in B and find an input aa with f(a)=bf(a) = b.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
