Density of the normal distribution

Definition

Let μ∈R\mu \in \mathbb{R} and σ2>0\sigma^2 > 0. The density of the normal distribution with mean μ\mu and variance σ2\sigma^2 is the function φμ,σ2 ⁣:R→(0,∞)\varphi_{\mu, \sigma^2} \colon \mathbb{R} \to (0, \infty) with φμ,σ2(x)=12πσ2exp⁡(−(x−μ)22σ2).\varphi_{\mu, \sigma^2}(x) = \frac{1}{\sqrt{2\pi\sigma^2}} \exp\left(-\frac{(x - \mu)^2}{2\sigma^2}\right). The standard normal density is φ(x)=φ0,1(x)=12πe−x2/2\varphi(x) = \varphi_{0, 1}(x) = \frac{1}{\sqrt{2\pi}} e^{-x^2/2}.

Remarks

The integral of φμ,σ2\varphi_{\mu, \sigma^2} over R\mathbb{R} is 11. This follows from the Gaussian integral ∫−∞∞e−x2 dx=π\int_{-\infty}^{\infty} e^{-x^2} \, dx = \sqrt{\pi}. So φμ,σ2\varphi_{\mu, \sigma^2} is a probability density function, the density of the normal distribution N(μ,σ2)\mathcal{N}(\mu, \sigma^2). The function is symmetric about μ\mu, has its maximum 1/2πσ21/\sqrt{2\pi\sigma^2} at x=μx = \mu, and has inflection points at μ±σ\mu \pm \sigma. It satisfies φμ,σ2(x)=1σφ(x−μσ)\varphi_{\mu, \sigma^2}(x) = \frac{1}{\sigma} \varphi\left(\frac{x - \mu}{\sigma}\right) with σ=σ2\sigma = \sqrt{\sigma^2}.

Explanations

L1 human

This is the formula of the bell curve. The exponent −(x−μ)2/(2σ2)-(x - \mu)^2 / (2\sigma^2) makes the curve fall very fast away from μ\mu, and the constant in front makes the total area equal to 11.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
