Student's t-distribution
Definition
Let be a real number. Student's t-distribution with degrees of freedom, written , is the law on with the density
Remarks
Let be standard normal and (see chi-squared distribution), independent. Then . For an i.i.d. sample of size , , with the sample mean and the sample standard deviation . The mean is for , and the variance is for . For , is the standard Cauchy distribution. As , the density of converges to the standard normal density.
Explanations
L1 human
The t-distribution looks like the bell curve, but it gives more probability to values far from . It takes into account the extra uncertainty when the standard deviation comes from a small sample. With many degrees of freedom, it is almost the normal law.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
What depends on this
