Metrizable space

Definition

A topological space (X,τ)(X, \tau) is metrizable when there is a metric dd on XX whose metric topology is τ\tau.

Remarks

The metric is not unique: equivalent metrics give the same topology. Each metrizable space is Hausdorff and normal. An indiscrete space with at least two points is not metrizable. Urysohn's metrization theorem: each second-countable regular Hausdorff space is metrizable.

Explanations

A metrizable space is a topological space where you can measure distances in a way that gives exactly the open sets you already have. Properties that hold in all metric spaces then hold in this space.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
