statement theorem

The characteristic function determines the distribution

Statement

Let XX and YY be real random variables with characteristic functions φX\varphi_X and φY\varphi_Y. If φX(t)=φY(t)\varphi_X(t) = \varphi_Y(t) for all t∈Rt \in \mathbb{R}, then XX and YY have the same law.

Remarks

The proof uses the Lévy inversion formula. For real a<ba < b that are continuity points of the cumulative distribution function FXF_X, FX(b)−FX(a)=lim⁡T→∞12π∫−TTe−ita−e−itbit φX(t) dt.F_X(b) - F_X(a) = \lim_{T \to \infty} \frac{1}{2\pi} \int_{-T}^{T} \frac{e^{-ita} - e^{-itb}}{it} \, \varphi_X(t) \, dt. If ∫∣φX(t)∣ dt<∞\int |\varphi_X(t)| \, dt < \infty, then XX has the continuous density fX(x)=12π∫e−itxφX(t) dtf_X(x) = \frac{1}{2\pi} \int e^{-itx} \varphi_X(t) \, dt. The same result holds for random vectors in Rn\mathbb{R}^n, with φX(t)=E[ei⟨t,X⟩]\varphi_X(t) = E[e^{i \langle t, X \rangle}].

Explanations

L1 human

Two different distributions cannot have the same characteristic function. So, to identify a distribution, it is enough to compute its characteristic function and recognize it.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this
