definition

Locally compact space

Definition

A topological space XX is locally compact when each point x∈Xx \in X has a neighbourhood NN that is compact.

Remarks

Authors use several stronger definitions, for example that each neighbourhood of xx contains a compact neighbourhood of xx. For Hausdorff spaces, all the usual definitions agree. Each compact space is locally compact. The space Rn\mathbb{R}^n is locally compact, because each closed ball is compact. The rationals Q\mathbb{Q} and each infinite-dimensional normed space are not locally compact. A locally compact Hausdorff space has a Hausdorff one-point compactification.

Explanations

L1 human

A locally compact space is compact in small pieces: each point has a compact set around it. The real line is not compact, but each closed interval in it is.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this
