One-point compactification

Definition

Let (X,τ)(X, \tau) be a topological space and let ∞\infty be a point not in XX. Let X∗=X∪{∞}X^* = X \cup \{\infty\}. The one-point compactification, or Alexandroff extension, of XX is the set X∗X^* with the following topology. The open sets are the sets U∈τU \in \tau and the sets X∗∖CX^* \setminus C, where C⊆XC \subseteq X is closed and compact in XX.

Remarks

The space X∗X^* is compact, and XX is an open subspace of X∗X^*. The space X∗X^* is Hausdorff if and only if XX is locally compact and Hausdorff. The one-point compactification of Rn\mathbb{R}^n is homeomorphic to the sphere SnS^n, by stereographic projection. For n=1n = 1, it is the circle.

Explanations

L1 human

You make a non-compact space compact by adding one point, and you declare that the new point is near everything outside large compact sets. The real line becomes a circle: both ends meet at the new point.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
