Compact set

Definition

Let XX be a topological space and let K⊆XK \subseteq X. The set KK is compact when KK, with the subspace topology, is a compact space.

Remarks

By compactness via open covers, KK is compact exactly when each cover of KK by open sets of XX has a finite subcover. Each finite subset of XX is compact. The empty set is compact. In R\mathbb{R}, the interval [0,1][0, 1] is compact, but (0,1)(0, 1) and [0,∞)[0, \infty) are not. The Heine–Borel theorem describes the compact subsets of Rn\mathbb{R}^n.

Explanations

L1 human

A compact set behaves in many ways like a finite set. For example, a continuous real function on a compact set is bounded and attains its maximum, as a function on a finite set does.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
