statement proposition

Closed subsets of compact sets are compact

Statement

Let XX be a topological space, let K⊆XK \subseteq X be compact and let F⊆XF \subseteq X be closed with F⊆KF \subseteq K. Then FF is compact.

Remarks

Proof: let (Ui)(U_i) be open sets of XX that cover FF. Add the open set X∖FX \setminus F to get an open cover of KK. A finite subcover of KK gives, after you remove X∖FX \setminus F, a finite subcover of FF. More generally, if KK is compact and FF is closed, then K∩FK \cap F is compact. For example, the Cantor set is compact, because it is a closed subset of [0,1][0, 1].

Explanations

L1 human

A closed part of a compact set is again compact. The open complement of the closed part covers everything outside it, so it does the job of all the extra open sets.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
