statement theorem
Heine–Cantor theorem
Statement
Let and be metric spaces and let be a continuous map. If is compact, then is uniformly continuous.
Remarks
Proof by contradiction: if is not uniformly continuous, there are and points with and . By sequential compactness, a subsequence of converges to some , and the matching subsequence of also converges to . Continuity at gives a contradiction. For example, each continuous is uniformly continuous. This fact is used to show that is Riemann integrable. The theorem fails on : is continuous but not uniformly continuous.
Explanations
L1 human
On a compact space, continuity at each point is enough to get one for the whole space. Compactness rules out regions where the function becomes steeper and steeper without end.
