statement proposition
Epsilon-delta uniform continuity
Statement
Let and be metric spaces and let be a function. Then the following two conditions are equivalent:
- For each real there is a real such that for all with .
- For all sequences and in with , also .
The map is uniformly continuous when it satisfies these conditions.
Remarks
Condition 1 is the epsilon-delta definition of uniform continuity. Here depends only on , not on the points. Each uniformly continuous map is continuous. The converse fails: on is continuous but not uniformly continuous. Take and ; then . On a compact space, each continuous map to a metric space is uniformly continuous: this is the Heine–Cantor theorem. Each Lipschitz map is uniformly continuous.
Explanations
L1 human
For a uniformly continuous map, one input tolerance works in the whole space. The map gets steeper and steeper, so near large you need a smaller and smaller , and no single works.
What this node needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
