Open cover

Definition

Let XX be a topological space and let A⊆XA \subseteq X. An open cover of AA is a family (Ui)i∈I(U_i)_{i \in I} of open subsets of XX with A⊆⋃i∈IUiA \subseteq \bigcup_{i \in I} U_i. A subcover is a subfamily (Uj)j∈J(U_j)_{j \in J}, with J⊆IJ \subseteq I, that is still an open cover of AA. A subcover is finite when JJ is a finite set.

Remarks

The intervals (−n,n)(-n, n) for n≥1n \ge 1 form an open cover of R\mathbb{R}. It has no finite subcover. The intervals (1/n,1)(1/n, 1) for n≥2n \ge 2 form an open cover of (0,1)(0, 1) with no finite subcover. A set KK is compact when each open cover of KK has a finite subcover.

Explanations

L1 human

An open cover is a collection of open sets that together cover the whole set. You can think of them as patches, and a finite subcover uses only finitely many patches to cover the set.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
