Lebesgue number lemma

Statement

Let (X,d)(X, d) be a compact metric space and let (Ui)i∈I(U_i)_{i \in I} be an open cover of XX. Then there is a real δ>0\delta > 0 such that each subset A⊆XA \subseteq X with diameter diam⁡(A)<δ\operatorname{diam}(A) < \delta is contained in UiU_i for some i∈Ii \in I.

Remarks

Such a number δ\delta is a Lebesgue number of the cover. Equivalently, for each x∈Xx \in X, the ball B(x,δ/2)B(x, \delta / 2) lies in one of the sets UiU_i. Compactness is needed: the cover of (0,1)(0, 1) by the sets (1/n,1)(1/n, 1) has no Lebesgue number.

Explanations

L1 human

In a compact metric space, each open cover has a uniform size: each small enough set fits completely into one set of the cover. You can think of δ\delta as a safe size for a window that you move around the space.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
