definition

Open ball

Definition

Let (X,d)(X, d) be a metric space, let x∈Xx \in X and let r>0r > 0 be a real number. The open ball with centre xx and radius rr is the set B(x,r)={y∈X:d(x,y)<r}.B(x, r) = \{ y \in X : d(x, y) < r \}.

Remarks

The centre is in the ball: x∈B(x,r)x \in B(x, r), because d(x,x)=0<rd(x, x) = 0 < r. In R\mathbb{R} with the usual metric, B(x,r)B(x, r) is the open interval (x−r,x+r)(x - r, x + r). In the discrete metric, B(x,r)={x}B(x, r) = \{x\} for r≤1r \le 1 and B(x,r)=XB(x, r) = X for r>1r > 1. Some authors also allow r≤0r \le 0. Then B(x,r)B(x, r) is empty.

Explanations

L1 human

The open ball B(x,r)B(x, r) is the set of points that are less than rr away from xx. In the plane with the Euclidean metric, it is the inside of the circle of radius rr about xx, without the circle itself.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
