statement proposition

Open sets of a metric space

Statement

Let (X,d)(X, d) be a metric space and let U⊆XU \subseteq X. Then UU is open in the metric topology if and only if for each x∈Ux \in U there is a real ε>0\varepsilon > 0 with B(x,ε)⊆UB(x, \varepsilon) \subseteq U. Here B(x,ε)B(x, \varepsilon) is the open ball with centre xx and radius ε\varepsilon.

Remarks

The number ε\varepsilon can depend on xx. In R\mathbb{R}, the set (0,∞)(0, \infty) is open: for x>0x > 0, take ε=x\varepsilon = x. The set Q\mathbb{Q} is not open in R\mathbb{R}, because each ball about a rational number contains an irrational number.

Explanations

L1 human

This is the test for open sets that you use in practice. You pick any point of the set, and you find a small ball about it inside the set.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this

20 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
