statement proposition

Open balls are open

Statement

Let (X,d)(X, d) be a metric space, let x∈Xx \in X and let r>0r > 0. Then the open ball B(x,r)B(x, r) is an open set of XX.

Remarks

Proof: let y∈B(x,r)y \in B(x, r) and let ε=r−d(x,y)>0\varepsilon = r - d(x, y) > 0. If d(y,z)<εd(y, z) < \varepsilon, then d(x,z)≤d(x,y)+d(y,z)<rd(x, z) \le d(x, y) + d(y, z) < r by the triangle inequality. Thus B(y,ε)⊆B(x,r)B(y, \varepsilon) \subseteq B(x, r). The open sets of XX are exactly the unions of open balls.

Explanations

L1 human

A point inside an open ball is at some distance from the edge of the ball. A smaller ball about that point, with radius equal to this distance, stays inside the big ball.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
