statement proposition

Inclusion of a subspace is continuous

Statement

Let XX be a topological space, let S⊆XS \subseteq X have the subspace topology and let ι ⁣:S→X\iota \colon S \to X be the inclusion map ι(s)=s\iota(s) = s. Then ι\iota is continuous.

Remarks

Proof: for UU open in XX, the preimage is ι−1(U)=S∩U\iota^{-1}(U) = S \cap U, which is open in SS. Thus the restriction f∣S=f∘ιf|_S = f \circ \iota of a continuous map f ⁣:X→Yf \colon X \to Y is continuous. A map g ⁣:Z→Sg \colon Z \to S is continuous if and only if ι∘g ⁣:Z→X\iota \circ g \colon Z \to X is continuous. This is the universal property of the subspace topology.

Explanations

L1 human

Putting a subspace back into the big space is a continuous map. So when you restrict a continuous function to a subset, you get a continuous function.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
