Connected set

Definition

Let XX be a topological space and let S⊆XS \subseteq X. The set SS is connected when SS, with the subspace topology, is a connected space.

Remarks

Equivalently, there are no open sets U,VU, V of XX with S⊆U∪VS \subseteq U \cup V, S∩U∩V=∅S \cap U \cap V = \varnothing, S∩U≠∅S \cap U \neq \varnothing and S∩V≠∅S \cap V \neq \varnothing. The connected subsets of the real line are the intervals. The closure of a connected set is connected. A union of connected sets with a common point is connected.

Explanations

L1 human

A subset is connected when it is in one piece, as a space of its own. For example, the set Q\mathbb{Q} of rationals is not connected in R\mathbb{R}: the sets (−∞,2)(-\infty, \sqrt{2}) and (2,∞)(\sqrt{2}, \infty) split it.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this
