Statement

Let XX be an integrable real random variable and let b∈Rb \in \mathbb{R}. Then Var⁡(X+b)=Var⁡(X).\operatorname{Var}(X + b) = \operatorname{Var}(X).

Remarks

Proof: E[X+b]=E[X]+bE[X + b] = E[X] + b by linearity of expectation, so (X+b)−E[X+b]=X−E[X](X + b) - E[X + b] = X - E[X]. Together with the scaling rule, this gives Var⁡(aX+b)=a2Var⁡(X)\operatorname{Var}(aX + b) = a^2 \operatorname{Var}(X) for all real aa and bb.

Explanations

L1 human

If you add the same constant to every value, the whole distribution moves, but its spread does not change.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
