Transitive relation

Definition

Let RR be a binary relation on a set AA. The relation RR is transitive when, for all a,b,c∈Aa, b, c \in A, aRba \mathrel{R} b and bRcb \mathrel{R} c imply aRca \mathrel{R} c.

Remarks

The relations <<, ≤\le and == on R\mathbb{R} are transitive, and so is divisibility on Z\mathbb{Z}. "Is a parent of" is not transitive. The smallest transitive relation that contains RR is the transitive closure of RR.

Explanations

L1 human

Transitivity lets you chain steps. From 2<52 < 5 and 5<95 < 9 you get 2<92 < 9. In the graph of a transitive relation, each path of two arrows has a direct arrow as a shortcut.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this

39 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
