statement theorem
Transfinite induction
Statement
Let be a well-founded relation on a set and let be a predicate on . Assume that, for each , if holds for each with , then holds. Then holds for each .
Remarks
Proof: if the set of with is nonempty, it has an -minimal element . Then holds for each , so holds, a contradiction. For on , this is strong induction. For ordinal numbers, one often splits the step into three cases: zero, successor ordinals and limit ordinals.
Explanations
L1 human
Transfinite induction extends induction on to every well-founded order. You show: if the statement holds for everything below , then it holds for . Since you cannot go down forever, the statement holds everywhere.
