Definition

Let pp be a prime and let KK be a field of characteristic pp. The Artin–Schreier map is the additive homomorphism ℘ ⁣:K→K\wp \colon K \to K, ℘(x)=xp−x\wp(x) = x^p - x. For a∈Ka \in K, the Artin–Schreier polynomial of aa is xp−x−ax^p - x - a, and an Artin–Schreier extension of KK is a field K(α)K(\alpha) with αp−α=a\alpha^p - \alpha = a for some a∈Ka \in K. Artin–Schreier theory is the description of the cyclic extensions of degree pp of KK by these polynomials:

  1. if a∈℘(K)a \in \wp(K), then xp−x−ax^p - x - a splits into linear factors over KK;
  2. if a∉℘(K)a \notin \wp(K), then xp−x−ax^p - x - a is irreducible over KK, and K(α)/KK(\alpha)/K is a Galois extension that is cyclic of degree pp;
  3. every cyclic extension of degree pp of KK inside a separable closure KsK^{s} arises as in clause 2;
  4. the subgroups of order pp of K/℘(K)K/\wp(K) correspond bijectively to the cyclic extensions of degree pp of KK inside KsK^{s}.

In clause 4, the subgroup generated by the class of a∉℘(K)a \notin \wp(K) corresponds to K(α)⊆KsK(\alpha) \subseteq K^{s}, where αp−α=a\alpha^p - \alpha = a.

Remarks

Clauses 1 and 2 rest on one fact: if α\alpha is a root, the roots are α+i\alpha + i for i∈𝔽pi \in \F_p, since (α+i)p−(α+i)=αp−α(\alpha + i)^p - (\alpha + i) = \alpha^p - \alpha. Example: over K=𝔽2K = \F_2, the map ℘(x)=x2−x\wp(x) = x^2 - x sends 00 and 11 to 00, so a=1∉℘(K)a = 1 \notin \wp(K). Then x2+x+1x^2 + x + 1 is irreducible over 𝔽2\F_2, and 𝔽2(α)=𝔽4\F_2(\alpha) = \F_4 is cyclic of degree 22 over 𝔽2\F_2. Non-example: xp−ax^p - a is not an Artin–Schreier polynomial, and over K=𝔽p(t)K = \F_p(t) with a=ta = t it gives a purely inseparable extension, which is not Galois. More generally, the finite subgroups of K/℘(K)K/\wp(K) correspond to the finite abelian extensions of KK of exponent pp.
