Formally real field
Builds on FieldOrdered fieldCharacteristic of a fieldThe complex numbers cannot be ordered
Definition
Let be a field. The field is formally real if is not a sum of squares in . That is, there are no and with .
Remarks
Equivalently, for all and , if , then . By the Artin–Schreier theorem on orderings, is formally real if and only if carries a structure of ordered field. A formally real field has characteristic , since in characteristic one has with terms. Example: is formally real, because a sum of rational squares is at least in the usual order. Non-example: is not formally real, because ; this is why cannot be ordered.
