Solvability of x^n - a

Builds on Galois group of a polynomialSolvable groupPrimitive root of unityCharacteristic of a fieldCyclic extensionCyclotomic extension

Statement

Let KK be a field, let n≥1n \ge 1 be an integer that is not divisible by the characteristic of KK, and let a∈Ka \in K. Then the Galois group of xn−ax^n - a over KK is a solvable group.

Remarks

If a=0a = 0, the polynomial xnx^n splits over KK and the group is trivial. If a≠0a \ne 0, let LL be a splitting field and β∈L\beta \in L a root; the roots are βζk\beta \zeta^k, where ζ\zeta is a primitive nn-th root of unity, so ζ∈L\zeta \in L. Put E=K(ζ)E = K(\zeta); E/KE/K is a cyclotomic extension, and Gal⁡(E/K)\Gal(E/K) embeds in (ℤ/nℤ)×(\Z/n\Z)^\times, so it is abelian. The map σ↦σ(β)/β\sigma \mapsto \sigma(\beta)/\beta embeds Gal⁡(L/E)\Gal(L/E) in the cyclic group of nn-th roots of unity, so L/EL/E is a cyclic extension. Then Gal⁡(L/E)\Gal(L/E) is a normal subgroup of Gal⁡(L/K)\Gal(L/K) with abelian quotient Gal⁡(E/K)\Gal(E/K), so Gal⁡(L/K)\Gal(L/K) is solvable. Example: for x3−2x^3 - 2 over ℚ\Q, the subgroup is cyclic of order 33 and the quotient has order 22, giving S3S_3.

Going deeper

For a student

This is the base case of the easy direction of Galois' theorem on solvability. The two-step tower K⊆K(ζ)⊆LK \subseteq K(\zeta) \subseteq L is the model for every radical extension: first roots of unity, then pure roots. The same argument shows that Gal⁡(L/K)\Gal(L/K) embeds in the group of maps x↦ux+vx \mapsto ux + v on ℤ/nℤ\Z/n\Z with uu a unit.
