Field theory and polynomials Galois theory Concept

Cyclotomic extension

Summary

A cyclotomic extension of a field KK is obtained by adjoining roots of unity to KK. The extension K(ζn)/KK(\zeta_n)/K generated by a primitive nn-th root of unity is Galois, and its Galois group embeds in (ℤ/nℤ)×(\Z/n\Z)^\times, so it is abelian. Over ℚ\Q the embedding is an isomorphism, because the cyclotomic polynomials are irreducible over the rationals. The fields ℚ(ζn)\Q(\zeta_n) are the cyclotomic fields of number theory.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
