definition

Root of unity

Definition

Let nn be a positive integer. A complex number zz is an nnth root of unity when zn=1z^n = 1. A complex number zz is a root of unity when it is an nnth root of unity for some positive integer nn.

Remarks

The same definition works in any field, or in any commutative ring. The nnth roots of unity in C\mathbb{C} form a group under multiplication, written μn\mu_n. For example, the 44th roots of unity are 11, ii, −1-1 and −i-i. Each root of unity zz satisfies ∣z∣=1|z| = 1, because ∣z∣n=∣zn∣=1|z|^n = |z^n| = 1.

Explanations

L1 human

A root of unity is a number that gives 11 when you multiply it by itself often enough. The number −1-1 is one, because (−1)2=1(-1)^2 = 1, and so is ii, because i4=1i^4 = 1.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Complex numbers object
  2. Root of unity definition

What depends on this

7 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
