Definition
Let be a field and let be an integer that is not divisible by the characteristic of . A field extension is an -th cyclotomic extension if both conditions hold:
- contains a primitive -th root of unity ;
- .
Equivalently, is a splitting field of over . More generally, let be a set of positive integers. Then is an -cyclotomic extension if contains a primitive -th root of unity for each . Moreover must be generated over by the roots of unity of these orders.
Remarks
Example: is a -th cyclotomic extension, since has order in and is generated by . Non-example: is not a -rd cyclotomic extension, since is a subfield of and contains no primitive cube root of unity. The two forms agree because the roots of are the powers of . An -th cyclotomic extension is Galois, and with is an injective homomorphism . For this map is an isomorphism, and is the cyclotomic field .
