Definition

Let 𝔀\mathfrak g be a Lie algebra over a field kk. For subspaces π”ž,π”ŸβŠ†π”€\mathfrak a, \mathfrak b \subseteq \mathfrak g, let [π”ž,π”Ÿ][\mathfrak a, \mathfrak b] be the span of all [a,b][a, b] with aβˆˆπ”ža \in \mathfrak a and bβˆˆπ”Ÿb \in \mathfrak b. The derived series of 𝔀\mathfrak g is given by 𝔀(0)=𝔀\mathfrak g^{(0)} = \mathfrak g and 𝔀(i+1)=[𝔀(i),𝔀(i)]\mathfrak g^{(i+1)} = [\mathfrak g^{(i)}, \mathfrak g^{(i)}] for iβ‰₯0i \ge 0. The Lie algebra 𝔀\mathfrak g is solvable if 𝔀(n)=0\mathfrak g^{(n)} = 0 for some nβ‰₯0n \ge 0.

Remarks

Each 𝔀(i)\mathfrak g^{(i)} is a Lie ideal of 𝔀\mathfrak g, and 𝔀(i)/𝔀(i+1)\mathfrak g^{(i)} / \mathfrak g^{(i+1)} is abelian. An equivalent condition: there is a chain of subalgebras 𝔀=π”ž0βŠ‡π”ž1βŠ‡β‹―βŠ‡π”žn=0\mathfrak g = \mathfrak a_0 \supseteq \mathfrak a_1 \supseteq \cdots \supseteq \mathfrak a_n = 0 in which each π”ži+1\mathfrak a_{i+1} is an ideal of π”ži\mathfrak a_i and each π”ži/π”ži+1\mathfrak a_i / \mathfrak a_{i+1} is abelian. Subalgebras and quotients of solvable Lie algebras are solvable; if an ideal π”ž\mathfrak a and the quotient 𝔀/π”ž\mathfrak g / \mathfrak a are solvable, then 𝔀\mathfrak g is solvable.

Example: the two-dimensional Lie algebra with basis x,yx, y and [x,y]=y[x, y] = y. Its derived algebra 𝔀(1)\mathfrak g^{(1)} is spanned by yy, and 𝔀(2)=[ky,ky]=0\mathfrak g^{(2)} = [ky, ky] = 0.

Non-example: the special linear Lie algebra 𝔰𝔩2\mathfrak{sl}_2 over a field of characteristic not 22, with basis e,h,fe, h, f and [h,e]=2e[h, e] = 2e, [h,f]=βˆ’2f[h, f] = -2f, [e,f]=h[e, f] = h. The brackets e=12[h,e]e = \tfrac12 [h, e], f=βˆ’12[h,f]f = -\tfrac12 [h, f] and h=[e,f]h = [e, f] lie in 𝔀(1)\mathfrak g^{(1)}, so 𝔀(1)=𝔰𝔩2\mathfrak g^{(1)} = \mathfrak{sl}_2 and the derived series never reaches 00.
