Definition

Let 𝔀\mathfrak g be a Lie algebra over a field kk, with lower central series 𝔀1=𝔀\mathfrak g^1 = \mathfrak g and 𝔀i+1=[𝔀,𝔀i]\mathfrak g^{i+1} = [\mathfrak g, \mathfrak g^i]. The Lie algebra 𝔀\mathfrak g is nilpotent if 𝔀n=0\mathfrak g^n = 0 for some nβ‰₯1n \ge 1.

Remarks

Equivalently, there is nn such that [x1,[x2,[β‹―[xnβˆ’1,xn]⋯ ]]]=0[x_1, [x_2, [\cdots [x_{n-1}, x_n] \cdots]]] = 0 for all x1,…,xnβˆˆπ”€x_1, \dots, x_n \in \mathfrak g. Abelian Lie algebras are nilpotent, with 𝔀2=0\mathfrak g^2 = 0. By induction, the derived series satisfies 𝔀(i)βŠ†π”€i+1\mathfrak g^{(i)} \subseteq \mathfrak g^{i+1}, so a nilpotent Lie algebra is solvable.

Example: the Heisenberg algebra with basis x,y,zx, y, z, [x,y]=z[x, y] = z and zz central. Here 𝔀2=kz\mathfrak g^2 = kz and 𝔀3=0\mathfrak g^3 = 0.

Non-example: the two-dimensional Lie algebra with basis x,yx, y and [x,y]=y[x, y] = y. Here 𝔀2=ky\mathfrak g^2 = ky and 𝔀3=[𝔀,ky]=ky\mathfrak g^3 = [\mathfrak g, ky] = ky because [x,y]=y[x, y] = y, so 𝔀i=ky\mathfrak g^i = ky for all iβ‰₯2i \ge 2. This algebra is solvable but not nilpotent.
