Statement
Let be a field. For a Lie algebra write for the span of all brackets.
- Every Lie algebra of dimension over is abelian.
- A Lie algebra of dimension over is either abelian or isomorphic to the Lie algebra with basis and .
- Let be a Lie algebra of dimension over . Then is isomorphic to exactly one of the following.
- The abelian Lie algebra .
- The Heisenberg algebra, the case and , where is the center.
- The direct sum of the nonabelian -dimensional Lie algebra and , the case and .
- A Lie algebra with basis , , , , for some with ; here if and only if or .
- The Lie algebra with basis , , , .
- The special linear Lie algebra , the case .
The cases 4 and 5 are those with .
Remarks
In dimension , if is not abelian then is a line ; choosing with and rescaling gives . In dimension the proof splits by . If , one shows that is abelian and that acts on by an invertible map for . Its Jordan form, up to scaling , gives cases 4 and 5. If , one shows that some has a nonzero eigenvalue, and its eigenvectors give an -triple that spans . Over the list is longer, since may have non-real eigenvalues and and are not isomorphic; the real case is the Bianchi classification.
Going deeper
For a student
The invariant that organizes the proof is the derived algebra and its relation to the center. The solvable cases, with , reduce to linear algebra: a -dimensional abelian ideal and one operator acting on it. The case forces , the smallest simple Lie algebra. In higher dimensions the lists grow quickly and contain families with several parameters.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
