Representation of a Lie algebra

Builds on Lie algebraLie algebra homomorphismGeneral linear Lie algebraVector space

Definition

Let 𝔀\mathfrak{g} be a Lie algebra over a field FF, and let VV be a vector space over FF. Let 𝔀𝔩(V)\mathfrak{gl}(V) be the general linear Lie algebra of all linear maps Vβ†’VV \to V, with bracket [A,B]=ABβˆ’BA[A, B] = AB - BA. A representation of 𝔀\mathfrak{g} on VV is a Lie algebra homomorphism ρ ⁣:𝔀→𝔀𝔩(V)\rho \colon \mathfrak{g} \to \mathfrak{gl}(V). So ρ\rho is linear and ρ([x,y])=ρ(x)ρ(y)βˆ’Ο(y)ρ(x)\rho([x, y]) = \rho(x)\rho(y) - \rho(y)\rho(x) for all x,yβˆˆπ”€x, y \in \mathfrak{g}.

Remarks

Equivalently, a 𝔀\mathfrak{g}-module is a vector space VV with a bilinear map 𝔀×Vβ†’V\mathfrak{g} \times V \to V, (x,v)↦xβ‹…v(x, v) \mapsto x \cdot v, such that [x,y]β‹…v=xβ‹…(yβ‹…v)βˆ’yβ‹…(xβ‹…v)[x, y] \cdot v = x \cdot (y \cdot v) - y \cdot (x \cdot v). The two notions match through xβ‹…v=ρ(x)(v)x \cdot v = \rho(x)(v); the dimension of VV is the dimension of the representation. Example: the adjoint representation ad⁑ ⁣:x↦[x,⋅ ]\operatorname{ad} \colon x \mapsto [x, \cdot\,] on V=𝔀V = \mathfrak{g}. The condition ad⁑[x,y]=[ad⁑x,ad⁑y]\operatorname{ad}[x, y] = [\operatorname{ad} x, \operatorname{ad} y] is the Jacobi identity. Non-example: on 𝔀𝔩n(F)\mathfrak{gl}_n(F) with nβ‰₯2n \ge 2, the map x↦xTx \mapsto x^T is linear, but ([x,y])T=yTxTβˆ’xTyT=βˆ’[xT,yT]([x, y])^T = y^T x^T - x^T y^T = -[x^T, y^T], which differs from [xT,yT][x^T, y^T] when [x,y]β‰ 0[x, y] \ne 0 and FF does not have characteristic 22. The map xβ†¦βˆ’xTx \mapsto -x^T is a representation, the dual of the defining one. Representations of 𝔀\mathfrak{g} are the same as left modules over the universal enveloping algebra U(𝔀)U(\mathfrak{g}).
