Octonions
Builds on The quaternionsNonassociative ring
Description
The octonions form an -dimensional real algebra. One construction is the CayleyβDickson construction applied to the quaternions . An octonion is a pair of quaternions, with componentwise addition and the product where is the quaternion conjugate. The conjugate of is , and the norm is . The real numbers sit in as the pairs with , and is the unit.
Remarks
is not associative, so it is a nonassociative ring and not a ring in the usual sense. Let be the quaternion units, identified with , , , and let . The product formula gives and . Hence , while , so . is alternative: and for all , and any two elements generate an associative subalgebra. The norm is multiplicative, , so is a normed division algebra. By Hurwitz's theorem, , , and are the only normed division algebras over with a unit. The automorphism group of is the compact exceptional Lie group .
