Conformal field theory
Definition
Let and work on Euclidean space . Let a quantum field theory be given by the correlation functions of a family of local fields at distinct points. It is a conformal field theory on if it has the following properties.
- The theory is invariant under translations and rotations, and it has a stress tensor that is symmetric and traceless.
- The fields are spanned by primary fields and their derivatives. Each primary field has a scaling dimension and a transformation law under the rotation group.
- Let be a global conformal map, a composition of translations, rotations, dilations and inversions, defined at the points , and set . For scalar primary fields of dimensions , with the analogous rule for primary fields of non-zero spin.
Remarks
For , Liouville's theorem says that the conformal maps are generated by translations, rotations, dilations and inversion, and they form a group locally isomorphic to . For , every holomorphic map is locally conformal, but clause 3 is required only for the global ones, the Möbius transformations. The local conformal maps act infinitesimally through the stress tensor, which gives two commuting copies of the Virasoro algebra with a central charge .
Consequence: invariance under translations, rotations, dilations and inversion forces the two-point function of a scalar primary to be for a constant . Check with the dilation , : the left side is , which is the right side.
Example: the free massless scalar field in , with , is a conformal field theory, and is a primary of dimension .
Non-example: the free scalar field of mass has a two-point function that decays like at large distance. This is not a power of , so clause 3 fails for dilations.
There are several rigorous frameworks for conformal field theory, such as vertex operator algebras and Segal's functorial definition in dimension two, and conformal nets of operator algebras.
