Definition

Let kk be a field of characteristic 00, and let 𝔀\mathfrak g be a finite-dimensional Lie algebra over kk. The Lie algebra 𝔀\mathfrak g is reductive if its adjoint representation is completely reducible. That is, every ideal π”ž\mathfrak a of 𝔀\mathfrak g has a complementary ideal π”Ÿ\mathfrak b, with 𝔀=π”žβŠ•π”Ÿ\mathfrak g = \mathfrak a \oplus \mathfrak b as vector spaces.

Remarks

The ideals of 𝔀\mathfrak g are exactly the subspaces that are invariant under the adjoint representation. Equivalent conditions, with 𝔷\mathfrak z the center of 𝔀\mathfrak g:

  1. 𝔀=π”·βŠ•[𝔀,𝔀]\mathfrak g = \mathfrak z \oplus [\mathfrak g, \mathfrak g] and [𝔀,𝔀][\mathfrak g, \mathfrak g] is semisimple;
  2. 𝔀\mathfrak g is the direct sum of an abelian ideal and a semisimple ideal;
  3. the radical of 𝔀\mathfrak g equals 𝔷\mathfrak z.

Example: the general linear Lie algebra 𝔀𝔩n(k)\mathfrak{gl}_n(k). It is the direct sum of the ideal kIkI of scalar matrices, which is its center, and the semisimple ideal 𝔰𝔩n(k)\mathfrak{sl}_n(k), so condition 2 holds.

Non-example: the two-dimensional Lie algebra with basis x,yx, y and [x,y]=y[x, y] = y. The line kyky is an ideal. A complementary line is spanned by some x+cyx + cy, and [y,x+cy]=βˆ’y[y, x + cy] = -y does not lie in it, so it is not an ideal. Hence the adjoint representation is not completely reducible.
