Definition
Let be a Lie algebra over a field . The Lie algebra is simple if:
Remarks
Example: the special linear Lie algebra with , basis and , , . It is not abelian. Let be a nonzero ideal and nonzero. Then and lie in ; if or , then contains or , and bracketing with or gives and then all of . If , then , and and lie in . So .
Non-example: the general linear Lie algebra with is not abelian, but it fails clause 2: the scalar matrices form a nonzero proper ideal.
Clause 1 excludes the one-dimensional Lie algebra, which has no ideals other than and itself. For a nonzero , clause 1 can be replaced by , and then clause 2 forces .
