Wess–Zumino–Witten model

Example

Let GG be a compact, connected, simply connected simple Lie group with Lie algebra 𝔤\mathfrak{g}. Let ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\ip{\cdot}{\cdot} be the invariant inner product on 𝔤\mathfrak{g} normalized so that long roots have squared length 22. Let Σ\Sigma be a closed Riemann surface and kk a positive integer, the level. The fields of the Wess–Zumino–Witten model are smooth maps g ⁣:Σ→Gg \colon \Sigma \to G, and its action is Sk(g)=k8π∫Σ⟨g−1∂μg,g−1∂μg⟩ d2x+k Γ(g).S_k(g) = \frac{k}{8\pi} \int_\Sigma \ip{g^{-1}\partial_\mu g}{g^{-1}\partial^\mu g} \, d^2x + k \, \Gamma(g). The first term is the action of the non-linear sigma model with target GG. The second, the Wess–Zumino term, is Γ(g)=∫Bg~∗χ\Gamma(g) = \int_B \tilde g^* \chi. Here BB is a 33-manifold with boundary Σ\Sigma, and g~ ⁣:B→G\tilde g \colon B \to G extends gg. The form χ\chi is the bi-invariant 33-form χ(X,Y,Z)=c⟨X,[Y,Z]⟩\chi(X, Y, Z) = c \ip{X}{[Y, Z]} on GG. The constant cc is chosen so that the integral of χ\chi over every closed 33-cycle in GG lies in 2πℤ2\pi\Z.

Check that the model is well defined: two extensions g~\tilde g and g~′\tilde g' glue to a map from a closed 33-manifold to GG. So Γ(g)\Gamma(g) changes by an element of 2πℤ2\pi\Z, and eiSk(g)e^{iS_k(g)} does not depend on the extension when kk is an integer. An extension exists because π1(G)=π2(G)=0\pi_1(G) = \pi_2(G) = 0.

Remarks

Edward Witten introduced the model in 1984, adding the Wess–Zumino term to the sigma model with target GG. With the relative normalization of the two terms used by Witten, the model is a conformal field theory. Its symmetry contains two copies of the affine Lie algebra 𝔤^\hat{\mathfrak{g}} at level kk, one for each chirality. The Sugawara construction builds the Virasoro algebra from the currents, with central charge c=kdim⁡Gk+h∨,c = \frac{k \dim G}{k + h^\vee}, where h∨h^\vee is the dual Coxeter number of 𝔤\mathfrak{g}. For G=SU(2)G = SU(2), dim⁡G=3\dim G = 3 and h∨=2h^\vee = 2, so c=3k/(k+2)c = 3k/(k + 2); at k=1k = 1 the central charge is 11, that of a free boson at a special radius.
