Definition
Let and be Riemannian manifolds of dimensions and , and let be a smooth map. Use local coordinates on and on . The tension field of is where is the Laplace–Beltrami operator of and are the Christoffel symbols of . The map is harmonic if on .
Remarks
The tension field is a section of and does not depend on the coordinates; it is the trace with respect to of the covariant derivative of . Let be compact. Then is harmonic if and only if it is a critical point of the energy which generalizes the Dirichlet energy; indeed is the gradient of .
Example: let ; then and is harmonic if and only if . Let be an interval with its standard metric; then is the geodesic equation, so harmonic maps from an interval are constant-speed geodesics.
Non-example: let with the standard metric and . Here and , so is not harmonic, although it is a diffeomorphism. The identity map is harmonic.
