Definition

Let kk be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 00, and let 𝔀\mathfrak g be a finite-dimensional Lie algebra over kk. A parabolic subalgebra of 𝔀\mathfrak g is a subalgebra 𝔭\mathfrak p of 𝔀\mathfrak g that contains a Borel subalgebra of 𝔀\mathfrak g.

Remarks

Example: in the general linear Lie algebra 𝔀𝔩3(k)\mathfrak{gl}_3(k), let 𝔭\mathfrak p be the set of matrices whose (3,1)(3, 1) and (3,2)(3, 2) entries vanish. It is closed under the commutator, since it is the set of matrices that map the plane ke1+ke2k e_1 + k e_2 into itself. It contains the upper triangular matrices, which form a Borel subalgebra, so 𝔭\mathfrak p is parabolic.

Non-example: in the special linear Lie algebra 𝔰𝔩2(k)\mathfrak{sl}_2(k), the line khkh spanned by h=diag⁑(1,βˆ’1)h = \operatorname{diag}(1, -1) is a subalgebra, but it is not parabolic. Every Borel subalgebra of 𝔰𝔩2(k)\mathfrak{sl}_2(k) has dimension 22, so none fits inside the one-dimensional khkh.

Every Borel subalgebra and the whole algebra 𝔀\mathfrak g are parabolic. For a semisimple 𝔀\mathfrak g with a fixed Borel subalgebra π”Ÿ\mathfrak b and base Ξ”\Delta of simple roots, the parabolic subalgebras containing π”Ÿ\mathfrak b correspond bijectively to the subsets of Ξ”\Delta.
