Definition
Let be an algebra. An -ary operation and an -ary operation of commute if for all elements , , . The algebra is entropic if every two of its operations commute, including each operation with itself.
Remarks
Equivalently, is entropic if and only if each -ary operation is a homomorphism from the direct power to . For an algebra with a single binary operation, the condition for is exactly the medial law .
Example: a module over a commutative ring , with addition, the constant , negation and one unary operation for each . Addition commutes with itself because . Scalar multiplication commutes with addition because , and two scalars commute because . The checks for and negation, such as and , are similar.
Non-example: a nonabelian group under multiplication. Multiplication commutes with itself only if for all ; with this gives , which fails for some .
