Definition
Let denote the empty string. An -NFA is a tuple where:
- is a nonempty finite set of states;
- is an alphabet with ;
- is the transition function, with values in the power set of ;
- is the initial state;
- is the set of accepting states.
The automaton accepts a string when for some , and there are states with , for , and . The language of is the formal language of all strings that accepts.
Remarks
Example: over , let , , , , , , and on all other pairs. The word is accepted with and states , and . Non-example: the word is not accepted, since after reading every run is in state , which has no -move. The -closure of a state is the set of states reachable from by -moves alone. Replacing by and making accepting when removes the -moves without changing the language.
