Definition
Let be a signature with only function symbols and let be a set of variables. Let be a set of identities over and . The identities derivable from in equational logic, written , form the smallest set of identities that satisfies the following rules, for all terms :
- (axioms) every identity in is derivable;
- (reflexivity) is derivable;
- (symmetry) if is derivable, so is ;
- (transitivity) if and are derivable, so is ;
- (replacement) if is derivable for and is a function symbol of arity , then is derivable;
- (substitution) if is derivable and is a substitution, then is derivable.
Remarks
A derivation is a finite list of identities, each one in or obtained from earlier ones by a rule. Each rule preserves truth in every algebra, so every derivable identity holds in every algebra that satisfies ; Birkhoff's completeness theorem gives the converse.
Example: let . Rule 6 applied to the second axiom with gives , and rule 4 with the first axiom gives .
Non-example: is not derivable from . The group satisfies , and every derivable identity holds in it, but .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
