Number theory Equidistribution and exponential sums Theorem

Equidistribution theorem

Builds on Equidistribution modulo oneIrrational numberComplex exponential

Statement

Let α\alpha be an irrational number. Then the sequence (nα)n≥1(n\alpha)_{n \ge 1} is equidistributed modulo one. That is, for all 0≤a<b≤10 \le a < b \le 1, the proportion of n≤Nn \le N with nα−⌊nα⌋∈[a,b)n\alpha - \floor{n\alpha} \in [a, b) tends to b−ab - a as N→∞N \to \infty.

Remarks

A short proof uses Weyl's criterion. For a nonzero integer hh, the number e2πihαe^{2\pi i h \alpha} is not 11, since hα∉ℤh\alpha \notin \Z. The sum ∑n=1Ne2πihnα\sum_{n=1}^{N} e^{2\pi i h n \alpha} is a geometric sum, so its absolute value is at most 2/∣1−e2πihα∣2 / \abs{1 - e^{2\pi i h \alpha}}, a bound independent of NN. Dividing by NN gives a limit 00, which is Weyl's condition. The hypothesis that α\alpha is irrational is necessary: if α=p/q\alpha = p/q in lowest terms, then nαn\alpha takes only qq values modulo one. Example: log⁡102\log_{10} 2 is irrational, so the fractional parts of nlog⁡102n \log_{10} 2 are equidistributed. Hence the leading digit of 2n2^n is kk for a proportion log⁡10(1+1/k)\log_{10}(1 + 1/k) of the exponents nn; for instance the digit 11 occurs about 30.1%30.1\% of the time.

For a student

The theorem is the simplest case of Weyl's results on polynomial sequences. If a real polynomial pp has at least one irrational coefficient other than the constant term, then (p(n))(p(n)) is equidistributed modulo one. Its proof shows the general pattern: equidistribution follows from cancellation in exponential sums. It strengthens Kronecker's theorem that (nα)(n\alpha) is dense modulo one, and it expresses the unique ergodicity of the irrational rotation of the circle.
