Erdős distinct distances problem

Builds on Euclidean distance

Problem

Let n≥2n \ge 2 be an integer. For a set SS of nn points in the plane ℝ2\R^2, consider the Euclidean distances ∥p−q∥\norm{p - q} with p,q∈Sp, q \in S and p≠qp \ne q. Let g(n)g(n) be the least number of distinct values of these distances, over all such sets SS. Find the order of growth of g(n)g(n) as n→∞n \to \infty. Erdős conjectured that the square grid is essentially optimal. A weaker form of his conjecture says that g(n)≥n1−εg(n) \ge n^{1 - \varepsilon} for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0 and all large enough nn.

Remarks

Erdős posed the problem in 1946 and proved the lower bound g(n)=Ω(n)g(n) = \Omega(\sqrt{n}). A n×n\sqrt{n} \times \sqrt{n} piece of the integer lattice determines only O(n/log⁡n)O(n / \sqrt{\log n}) distinct distances, so g(n)=O(n/log⁡n)g(n) = O(n / \sqrt{\log n}). Guth and Katz proved the lower bound g(n)=Ω(n/log⁡n)g(n) = \Omega(n / \log n). This settles the weaker conjecture g(n)≥n1−εg(n) \ge n^{1 - \varepsilon}. The exact order of g(n)g(n) is still open: the known bounds differ by a factor of order log⁡n\sqrt{\log n}. The analogous questions in higher dimensions are also studied.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
