Combinatorics Ramsey theory Conjecture
Erdős–Hajnal conjecture
Statement
For every finite graph there is a constant with the following property. Let be a graph with vertices that has no induced subgraph isomorphic to . Then has a clique or an independent set with at least vertices.
Remarks
Without the hypothesis on , only a logarithmic bound holds. Every graph on vertices has a clique or an independent set of size at least , by Ramsey's theorem. Random graphs show that this order cannot be improved in general. Erdős and Hajnal proved that excluding gives a bound of the form with depending on . The conjecture is known for all graphs with at most four vertices. For the path on four vertices it is easy: such graphs are perfect, so the product of the clique number and the independence number is at least . The conjecture is open in general; the path on five vertices was settled only in 2023.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
