Definition
Let be a stationary, asymptotically flat spacetime, a Lorentzian manifold of signature that contains a black hole. Let be the stationary Killing vector field, normalised so that it is timelike near infinity with . The ergoregion is the set of points outside the black hole region, that is outside the event horizon, at which . Its boundary away from the horizon, where , is the ergosurface. The word ergosphere is used for the ergoregion, and sometimes for the ergosurface.
Remarks
At a point of the ergoregion, is spacelike, so no observer, whose world line is timelike, can follow an orbit of . Every observer there must rotate relative to infinity.
Example: in the Kerr metric of mass and spin with , in Boyer–Lindquist coordinates, This is positive exactly when , that is when . The horizon is at . So the ergoregion is , which is nonempty for and reaches at the equator.
Non-example: for the Schwarzschild metric (), for all . The set where is spacelike lies inside the horizon, so the ergoregion is empty.
