Essential extension
Builds on Congruence relationHomomorphism
Definition
Fix a signature, let be an algebra and let be a subalgebra of . The algebra is an essential extension of if every congruence of with is the trivial congruence . Here .
Remarks
Equivalently, every homomorphism from whose restriction to is injective is itself injective. An embedding is called essential when is an essential extension of . For modules over a ring, congruences correspond to submodules, and the condition says that every nonzero submodule of meets in a nonzero element.
Example: is an essential extension of as abelian groups. Congruences of correspond to subgroups , and means . If contains , then it contains the nonzero integer , so forces .
Non-example: is not an essential extension of as abelian groups. The subgroup meets only in , but .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
