Definition

Let XX be a quasi-compact quasi-separated scheme, and let ℓ≥2\ell \ge 2 be an integer invertible on XX, that is, invertible in Γ(X,𝒪X)\Gamma(X, \mathcal{O}_X). Let XetX_{\mathrm{et}} be the small étale site of XX, whose objects are the étale morphisms U→XU \to X with UU quasi-compact and quasi-separated, with the étale topology. Consider the presheaf of spectra U↦K(U)/ℓU \mapsto K(U)/\ell on XetX_{\mathrm{et}}, where K(U)/ℓK(U)/\ell is the mod ℓ\ell K-theory spectrum of the Thomason–Trobaugh K-theory of UU. The étale K-theory spectrum of XX with coefficients in ℤ/ℓ\Z/\ell is its étale hypercohomology spectrum: Ket(X;ℤ/ℓ)=ℍet(X;K/ℓ).K^{\mathrm{et}}(X; \Z/\ell) = \mathbb{H}_{\mathrm{et}}(X; K/\ell). This is the value on XX of the étale hypersheafification of the presheaf. Its homotopy groups are the étale K-groups Knet(X;ℤ/ℓ)K^{\mathrm{et}}_n(X; \Z/\ell).

Remarks

There is a natural comparison map K(X)/ℓ→Ket(X;ℤ/ℓ)K(X)/\ell \to K^{\mathrm{et}}(X; \Z/\ell). Assume that the étale cohomological dimension of XX for ℓ\ell-torsion sheaves is finite. Then a descent spectral sequence computes K∗et(X;ℤ/ℓ)K^{\mathrm{et}}_*(X; \Z/\ell) from the étale cohomology of XX with coefficients in the sheaves associated to U↦Kq(U;ℤ/ℓ)U \mapsto K_q(U; \Z/\ell).

Example: let X=Spec⁡kX = \operatorname{Spec} k with kk an algebraically closed field in which ℓ\ell is invertible. Every étale kk-algebra is a finite product of copies of kk, and K-theory turns finite products into products, so the presheaf already satisfies étale descent. Hence Ket(k;ℤ/ℓ)=K(k)/ℓK^{\mathrm{et}}(k; \Z/\ell) = K(k)/\ell, and Knet(k;ℤ/ℓ)≅ℤ/ℓK^{\mathrm{et}}_n(k; \Z/\ell) \cong \Z/\ell for even n≥0n \ge 0 and 00 otherwise, by Suslin's computation.

Non-example: the construction is not used when ℓ\ell is divisible by the characteristic of a residue field of XX. For ℓ=p\ell = p in characteristic pp, the étale cohomology of ℤ/p\Z/p sheaves behaves differently. The comparison with K-theory then takes another form.

The original constructions, by Friedlander and by Dwyer and Friedlander, used the étale homotopy type of XX instead of hypercohomology.
