Definition

Let XX be a topological space whose singular homology groups Hk(X)H_k(X) are finitely generated for all kk and zero for all but finitely many kk. The Euler characteristic of XX is χ(X)=∑k≥0(−1)kbk(X),\chi(X) = \sum_{k \ge 0} (-1)^k b_k(X), where bk(X)b_k(X) is the kk-th Betti number of XX.

Remarks

If XX is a finite CW complex with ckc_k cells of dimension kk, then χ(X)=∑k(−1)kck\chi(X) = \sum_k (-1)^k c_k. For the boundary of a convex polyhedron this is Euler's polyhedron formula V−E+F=2V - E + F = 2. For any field FF, χ(X)=∑k(−1)kdim⁡FHk(X;F)\chi(X) = \sum_k (-1)^k \dim_F H_k(X; F) under the same hypothesis.

Example: the torus has b0=1b_0 = 1, b1=2b_1 = 2, b2=1b_2 = 1, so χ(T2)=1−2+1=0\chi(T^2) = 1 - 2 + 1 = 0. Its usual CW structure has one 00-cell, two 11-cells and one 22-cell, and 1−2+1=01 - 2 + 1 = 0 again.

Non-example: the wedge of countably many circles has H1H_1 free abelian of infinite rank, so it fails the finiteness hypothesis and has no Euler characteristic in this sense.
