Definition

Let π ⁣:E→B\pi \colon E \to B be an oriented real vector bundle of rank nn over a paracompact space BB. Let s ⁣:B→Es \colon B \to E be the zero section and let E0⊂EE_0 \subset E be its complement. Let u∈Hn(E,E0;ℤ)u \in H^n(E, E_0; \Z) be the Thom class of EE. It is the unique relative class whose restriction to Hn(Eb,Eb∖{0};ℤ)≅ℤH^n(E_b, E_b \setminus \set{0}; \Z) \cong \Z is the oriented generator, for every b∈Bb \in B. Its existence and uniqueness is part of the Thom isomorphism theorem. The Euler class of EE is e(E)=s∗j∗u∈Hn(B;ℤ),e(E) = s^* j^* u \in H^n(B; \Z), where j∗ ⁣:Hn(E,E0;ℤ)→Hn(E;ℤ)j^* \colon H^n(E, E_0; \Z) \to H^n(E; \Z) is restriction to absolute cohomology.

Remarks

The Euler class is natural under pullback, so it is a characteristic class of oriented bundles. Reversing the orientation changes the sign of e(E)e(E). If EE has a nowhere-zero section σ\sigma, then ss is homotopic to σ\sigma as maps into EE and σ\sigma factors through E0E_0, where j∗uj^* u restricts to 00; so e(E)=0e(E) = 0. If nn is odd, then 2e(E)=02 e(E) = 0, because the map v↦−vv \mapsto -v reverses the orientation. The reduction of e(E)e(E) modulo 22 is the top Stiefel–Whitney class wn(E)w_n(E).

Example: for a closed oriented manifold MM, ⟨e(TM),[M]⟩=χ(M)\langle e(TM), [M] \rangle = \chi(M). For M=S2M = S^2 this gives e(TS2)=2e(TS^2) = 2 times the generator of H2(S2;ℤ)H^2(S^2; \Z).

Non-example: the Möbius line bundle over S1S^1 is not orientable, so it has no Euler class with integer coefficients in this sense; only its mod 22 analogue w1w_1 is defined.
